WELCOME TO STRATEGIC READING!
My goal is to develop students who can critically analyze and interpret texts and demonstrate their knowledge through written response and/or class discussions. I will share my love of reading and encourage students to explore multiple genres in order to become life-long learners.
Guidelines for Success
I set up my classroom to ensure that you will be successful. All you need to do is follow the Guidelines for Success.
- Be Prepared!
- Be your best!

- Be respectful!
Grading
Grading in SR is very different that your other classes.
- Assessment and feedback of your learning will be provided to you on a consistent basis.
- Each quarter your overall performance in SR will be recorded in gradebook as Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory.
- I will consider your overall growth in the following areas: literacy skills, fluency, vocabulary, and qualities of a reader.
- In addition to this, you and your parents will get detailed reports outlining your strengths and areas of improvement.
- Please note: online gradebook will be utilized to show performance and growth on literacy skills (4 - proficient: demonstrates a clear understanding of the skill through independent application, 3 - approaching: shows understanding of the skill, but student has not yet demonstrated consistent application, 2 - developing: understands some of the skill, but student is working to gain additional knowledge, 1 - emergent: student is acquiring knowledge of the skill with help from the teacher)
Assessments
My goal is to help increase your reading skills. In order to monitor your progress, I use several tools.
- Basic Reading Inventory
- Grade level comprehension passages
- Reading passages and written responses scored on standards based rubrics
- Aimsweb+

Personal Reading
Personal reading is the most important way that you can improve as a reader, and I will dedicate a lot of class time to this activity. I will help you find books and encourage you to grow as a reader. I have incentives set up for each time you complete a personal reading book. I will also conference with you about once a week. During this time you will talk about your PR book and answer any of my questions regarding it, and set goals to complete by the next conference.
